This site reveals a remarkable story of an Aston Martin custom made car which was modified prior to the war to conduct espionage activities, its driver, the secret missions all which would prove vital in preparation for war against Germany.
Perhaps the most curious aspect of Tony Mellor’s story is that it has largely lain buried in obscurity, unlike the careers of a plethora of far less remarkable agents and war heroes whose memoirs, biographies and news coverage are readily available. That some of his activities should be covered by the official secret act is understandable but the lack of evidence is surprising.
At Bowden Barracks one morning, a small wiry man with a voluble lively moustache arrived. He had escaped from Germany with his Dutch girlfriend. He had spent some 48 hours on the border with his car being dismantled by the Gestapo and the Border Police. They had every right to be suspicious as he was smuggling gold and jewellery in his custom made Aston Martin car. This for his Jewish friends. There was also a false bottom to the car battery in which were the plans of the Siegfried Line.
